Title of Artifact: Seating Chart & My Ideal Classroom
Date Completed: Fall 2013
Description: Before student teaching, I created my ideal classroom. Then, during my time as an intern for fourth grade at Darlington Elementary School, I saw several different seating charts. There was a wide variety, but I found a seating chart that had the students in groups that was very accommodating for the students. This is the seating chart I used during a portion of my time as an intern.
Alignment Reflection
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
This artifact aligns with standard five of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standard. This standard states “The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.” For my artifacts, I included both a drawing of my ideal classroom, as well as a seating chart I used as an intern at Darlington Elementary School. Both artifacts align with this standard because it shows that I understand individuals and groups of students need to be seated where they are engaged, can learn, and can interact with other students. The seating chart has students in groups, which allows them to work together and interact with one another. I understand that some individuals may need to sit in the front on the classroom if they have visual or hearing impairments. In my seating chart, I also have circle chairs near the back of the classroom at a couple of students’ desks. These circle chairs represent ball or bouncy chairs for those students who need to move around to stay engaged. I put these bouncy chairs in the back of the room, so if the students are moving around, they are not distracting other students. A seating chart is very important to creating an environment where all students can learn and interact. This seating chart allows students to interact in small groups, while still accommodating individual needs. My ideal classroom artifact has more specific physical resources that give the students opportunities to learn. There are different parts of the room for the students to work and actively engage in different activities. Both artifacts provide the students a great environment to learn in.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment
This artifact best aligns with KSD2.E. of the UWP School of Education, Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition statements which states, “The candidate has the ability to establish a classroom environment that is safe. Physical resources will be arranged to best serve the teacher and student in providing productive learning for all students.” These two artifacts align with KSD.2.e because I created a classroom environment that is spaced out in a way that makes it safe. There is space between tables and different areas of the room, so students have room to move around. The teacher’s desk is located in order to oversee the whole classroom to ensure safety and learning. The drawing of my ideal classroom shows all different kinds of resources arranged throughout the room so that they are easily accessible for me and the students. A classroom has to be safe, while still allowing students a comfortable atmosphere for learning with resources throughout the room for them to utilize. My artifacts show this type of environment that allows students to safely be engaged in learning.

Personal Reflection
What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience:
I learned that in order for teachers to have engaged students, a good learning environment must be established. Students need to be strategically placed in the room so that they are engaged in the learning process. This means putting students in groups they will work well with, as well as meeting any needs of specific individuals. The teacher also needs to have a learning environment that ensures safety. This means the room has to allow the students space to move around safely. The teacher must have the physical space organized so that students in the classroom are safe, engaged, and able to interact.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience/artifact:
I learned about myself as a future teacher, that I can have an idea of my ideal classroom, but once I have my own class, I will need to modify it to meet the needs of my students. I can use bits and pieces of my ideal classroom as long as it is meeting the needs of my students. I learned that I need to take time to get to know each of my students, so I can create an environment that allows them to learn to the best of their ability. Yes, I have my ideal classroom drawing, but this will have to be modified once I meet my students and know how to organize my classroom. I look forward to creating my own classroom that will be a positive learning environment for my students.
